Rosa von Praunheim (1942–2025) – renowned director, producer, author, and LGBTQ movement activist – adapted his own 1971 cult film into a musical for the stage of BAR JEDER VERNUNFT, creating a true highlight in our venue's history.
In an entertaining and hilarious performance, Anna Mateur and Heiner Bomhard interpret the film's main characters Luzi and Dietmar, with one clear advantage: they get to sing, dance, and engage in wonderful nonsense. Accompanied by catchy songs and upbeat arrangements based on Bomhard's music, they spin around the revolving stage alongside four co-stars until the entire room is cheering.
As the first director in Germany, Rosa von Praunheim staged the love story between Luzi from Kiel (of Polish descent) and Dietmar from Mannheim in the camp style already established in America. Following its television broadcast, the FAZ wrote: “Independent cinema has its masters too. The greatest in Germany is Rosa von Praunheim.”
With films such as “It Is Not the Homosexual Who Is Perverse, But the Society in Which He Lives,” he established his status as a cult and underground icon of German cinema, which remains influential to this day.
We bow to one of the country's bravest and most uncompromising artists – smart, witty, and provocative. With “Die Bettwurst – Das Musical!”, his spirit lives on on our stage.
